Why your cheap perfume is bankrupting you?

Updated: Apr 1

Are you sure that your ₹600 perfume is saving you money? Well, read on for an eye-opener for your blind nose! Hah!

Let's talk about the great Indian perfume scam. That ‘affordable’ ₹600 perfume you keep buying isn’t saving you money. We have convinced ourselves that buying a cheap perfume is ‘smart shopping’ when actually, we’re getting financially scammed by a tiny bottle. It’s draining your wallet drop by drop. The isn’t just about smell—it’s about real cost, longevity, and even your social life.

I did the math (and cried a little), so you don't have to.

₹600 Perfume vs. ₹1000 Ildela Perfume (50ml)

#1: The Daily Spray Scam of Cheap Perfumes

Surprise! The seemingly expensive Ildela perfume costs 22% less per day. Cheaper ₹600 Perfume demands 16 sprays daily to stay noticeable, while Ildela needs just 3 sprays

Cheap Perfume (5% Concentration):

·        Needs 16 sprays/day (4 sprays x 4 reapplications) just to stay noticeable.

·        Cost per spray: ₹600 ÷ 100ml = ₹0.6/spray.

·        Daily cost: 16 x ₹0.6 = ₹9.6/day (₹288/month).

Ildela Perfume (40% Concentration):

·        Only 3 sprays/day needed.

·        Cost per spray: ₹2500 ÷ 100ml = ₹2.5/spray.

Daily cost: 3 x ₹2.5 = ₹7.5/day (₹225/month).

#2: You are paying for Alcohol, Not Perfume

Let's play a game called ‘Spot the Actual Perfume’ in your ₹600 bottle. This metric exposes budget perfumes’ greatest flaw: you’re paying for water/alcohol, not luxury. That cheaper perfume is 95% alcohol—meaning you’re paying for evaporation, not perfume. The budget option costs almost double per unit of real fragrance. Ildela costs 48% less per unit of actual fragrance oil—a steal for scent enthusiasts.

Cheap Perfume (5% Concentration):

₹600 gets you 5ml of actual fragrance oil + 95ml alcohol.

Cost per ml of oil: ₹600 ÷ 5ml = ₹120/ml.

Ildela Perfume (40% Concentration):

₹2500 gets you 40ml of oil + 60ml alcohol.

Cost per ml of oil: ₹2500 ÷ 40ml = ₹62.5/ml.

With cheaper ₹600 perfume, assuming ₹5 per ml perfume oil cost, you're directly paying ₹575 for alcohol that evaporates before you leave your house. Oops!

#3: Annual Cost: The Shocking Truth

You know what happens over a year? You save ₹850/year with the apparently expensive Ildela perfume. Even with 50ml Ildela perfume like Rouge Noir, you will save ₹1314/year against the 50ml bottle of ₹300 perfume. That’s more than enough for a nice dinner out.

Cheap Perfume (₹600, 100ml):

₹600 every 2 months → ₹3,600/year.

Ildela Hukah Blanc (₹2500, 100ml):

Lasts 11 months → ₹2,750/year.

Cheap Perfume (₹300, 50ml):

₹300 every month → ₹3,600/year.

Ildela Rouge Noir (₹1000, 50ml):

Lasts 5.5 months → ₹2,190/year.

#4: Ildela offers 5X Bottle Lifespan

In comparison to your loved ₹600 perfume, one 100ml (₹2500) bottle of Ildela lasts 5x longer—meaning fewer purchases, less clutter, and more convenience. Whereas one 50ml (₹1000) Ildela bottles lasts 5.5x longer.

100ml Cheap Perfume:

100ml ÷ (16 sprays x 0.1ml) = 62.5 days (2 months).

100ml Ildela Perfume:

100ml ÷ (3 sprays x 0.1ml) = 333 days (11 months).

50ml Cheap Perfume:

50ml ÷ (16 sprays x 0.1ml) = 31.3 days (1 month).

50ml Ildela Perfume:

50ml ÷ (3 sprays x 0.1ml) = 166.7 days (5.6 months).

#5: Now, You will Ditch your ₹600 Perfume Forever

Let's address the elephant in the room: "₹2,500 for ONE perfume bottle?! I could buy 4 ₹600 perfumes for that!". Here's why that logic is more flawed than a free WiFi connection at a railway station:

Daily savings with Ildela perfume: ₹9.6 (cheap perfume) – ₹7.5 (Ildela) = ₹2.1/day.

Price difference: ₹2500 – ₹600 = ₹1,900.

Break-even point: ₹1900 ÷ ₹2.1 ≈ 905 days (~2.5 years).

What this really means:

·        Months 0-11: You're using your first Ildela bottle while cheap perfume users burn through 5.5 bottles

·        Month 22: You buy your second Ildela while cheap perfume users are on their 11th bottle

·        Month 30: You've spent ₹6,750 on Ildela vs. ₹9,000 on cheap perfume. Savings of ₹2250!

Actual Savings: After 2.5 years, which seems like an eternity, but you could take the ₹2,250 you saved and buy:

·        7.5 Starbucks Americano

·        1 really nice Shirt

·        Therapy sessions for all the years you wasted on cheap Smella Feeta perfume! Hah!

PS: Still using that ₹600 perfume? Congrats, you’re basically paying to smell like watered-down regret 😉
